"Bikers for Mandela" involved a group of celebrities and a group of motorcyclists on a five-day ride from Johannesburg to the coastal city of Cape Town with the aim to raise awareness about and support for Nelson Mandela Day. The bikers were stopping at selected villages and cities, where they participated in community projects and other social initiatives.

The legacy of Nelson Mandela was given wings with the unveiling of the Mandela Day logo by South African Airways (SAA) on the first aircraft of its entire fleet. The new branded A330-200 Airbus, fourth out of six new aircraft, was revealed to sponsors and the media at the airways’ technical park in Johannesburg. Jack Swart was Mr Mandela's warder and chef from 7 Dec 1988 to 11 Feb 1990 at Victor Verster Prison. This collection includes notes by Mandela to Swart, correspondence, photographs, recipes and menus of the food Swart cooked for Mandela, and a manuscript of Swart's life story in Afrikaans. It includes a video clip of the drive from the Victor Verster House to the prison gates that Mandela would have taken on 11 Feb 1990 when he was released.
An air-balloon made in honour of Nelson Mandela was released in Brazil. This balloon made of tissue paper and glue was made by 11 people for 8 months on average 4 hours per day, to honour the leader of a nation suffered.

The Great Park Synagoge hosted a 67 minutes drive to collect blankets, clothes and non-perishable foods. The Friends of the Inner City spent 67 minutes cleaning Lorna Court in Johannesburg's CBD as part of their ‘ Build your Neighbourhood’ initiative. The Conference Connection donated food and gifts to St Martins’ Children’s home and blankets to Reservoir Hills residents in Durban The DEC planted trees. Scorpion Legal Protection provided lunch to the Durban Children’s Home Free State Treasury planted trees A baby named after Mandela Moyo restaurant took party packs, face painters and drummers to the Umthombo Street Children in Durban and the Charlotte Maxeke hospital in Johannesburg. They also provided entertainment at a care centre for disabled children in Khayelitsha. Roedean School collected blankets and food for organisations which care for orphans and vulnerable children.
