The late former president of South Africa’s younger sister, Nomabandla Leaby Mandela also attended Orlando High in 1945 and her son, Makgatho Mandela later joined the school in 1967 along with Zwelakhe Sisulu.

The score music tribute to Nelson Mandela 100 concert commemorated Nelson Mandela’s Life and Legacy, calling for people in the world over to rise up and “Take Action, Insipre Change, Make Every Day a Mandela Day”. To commemorate this historic occasion, the Nelson Mandela Music Tribute (NMMT) on 18, 19 & 20 July at Praia do Aterro, Matosinhos, Porto, Portugal benefited the Nelson Mandela Foundation and local Portuguese charities including Apela.

The event was presented by the Municipality of Matosinhos / Porto and the Embassy of South Africa together with Score Music in association with Thirty-Three Productions, Inc., which joined together to organise a fitting musical tribute to Mandela and his legacy of achieving social change through peaceful means and dialogue.

The Nelson Mandela Music Tribute, staged on the shores of Matosinhos, Porto, was a three-day benefit event celebrating the indomitable spirit of Nelson Mandela, also known as Madiba. NMMT featured a star-studded lineup of world-class musical artists, award-winning actors, and celebrated dignitaries, with 100% of the net proceeds donated to charity.

Sello Hatang honoured with Keys to the City of Florence

The Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Sello Hatang awarded the Keys of the City of Florence by its Mayor, Dario Nardella. Sello Hatang was awarded this special honour to recognise his work in human rights and promoting the legacy of Nelson Mandela.

The keys were accompanied by a certificate that reads: “To Sello Hatang, who carries out the challenging and luminous task of keeping Madiba’s legacy alive. We share with him a long history of friendship and the ideal of an open society based on remembrance, solidarity, equality and respect for human rights.”

The Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI) organised an event to commemorate Mahlangu v Minister of Labour court case. In Mahlangu v Minister of Labour, the Court declared the constitutional invalidity of section 1(xix)(v) of the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act 130 of 1993 (COIDA), which excluded domestic workers employed in private households from the definition of "employee", thus precluding them from claiming from the Compensation Fund for work-related injuries, illness or death. Significantly, the Court also ruled that the order of constitutional invalidity is to have immediate and retrospective effect from 27 April 1994, which means domestic workers and dependants who have experienced work-related injuries, diseases or death as far back as 27 April 1994 are also able to submit claims.

The Switch-on of the Festive Lights, Adderley Street annually marks the start of the festive season in Cape Town. On 2 Dec 2018 the Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Ald Dan Plato switched on the festive lights at 20:30 where 80 000+ residents and tourists enjoyed the concert, festive lights and video mapping display on the City Hall wall of the theme. On 2 Dec 2018 the theme was: Cape Town, City of Inspiration. Madiba’s life of hope was displayed with the centenary message: Be the Legacy.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation provided library books for Bushbuckridge’s Mapaleni Primary School’s new library as part of the Mandela Day Library Initiative. Mapaleni is the feeder school to Makhosana Manzini High School in the rural village of Calcutta C in Mpumalanga on the edge of the Kruger National Park, and a beneficiary of a partnership between the Adopt-a-School Foundation, in collaboration with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), and the Department of Basic Education to improve schooling in the poverty-stricken area.

The first photograph was taken at Haga castle the day Mr Tambo and Mr Mandela had just met for the first time in 28 years. This picture is from the mingling afterwards at Haga castle, the others from the hospital and a young doctor Beth von Schreeb (at that time she went by the surname Henriksson).

It played a seminal role in the development of a socially informed school of documentary photography in apartheid South Africa.
