President Nelson Mandela today reacted as follows to the Nobel Peace Prize announcement:
"On behalf of the Government and the people of South Africa, and on my own behalf, I would like to express my sincere congratulations to John Hume and David Trimble on being awarded the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize. I reiterate my hope that Northern Ireland will become a shining beacon of peace to the international community and trust that the recipients of this year's prize will by their actions and example contribute to this process."
