White certificate in wood frame with gold border. Taken out of frame for preservation. Certificate includes image of the Coat of Arms of the City Council (2 horses, castles, and a lion) and a red seal, also with the coat of arms, affixed to the lower left corner. Certificate text is in red, black, and blue, and reads:
At a meeting of the Council of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne, specifically convened for the purpose with the notice of the object thereof, held in the Civic Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne on the second day of April 1986
It was resolved that this Council in pursuance of the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972, hereby confers the Honorary Freedom of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne upon
Nelson Mandela
in recognition of his services to the cause of freedom and accordingly it hereby admits Nelson Mandela to be an honorary Freeman of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne.
