The 11th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture with Doctor Mo Ibrahim. The event was held at the University of South Africa (UNISA) on the 17th of August 2013. The theme for the lecture was “Building social cohesion”: a call for all South Africans to work towards a united, cohesive, democratic and national society. Dr Ibrahim’s address focused on the need for social cohesion not only in South Africa, but also between the 54 nations that make up the African continent.

As the holder of the Follett Chair in information studies, on 16 April he delivered the annual Follett Lecture for 2019 (text attached). The Nelson Mandela Foundation invited Chief Khosi Vho Ravele R.R., five learners and five coordinators from Maulume Village to visit the Nelson Mandela Foundation and other legacy sites within Johannesburg. The Nelson Mandela Foundation pays tributes to Lucia Raadschelders, with family, friends, and colleagues. Following Lucia’s wishes, it was a modest occasion, with the emphasis on storytelling. Three of her nine siblings travelled from the Netherlands to attend. Her brother Jan Raadschelders shared reminiscences from her childhood. A number of her former Operation Vula comrades attested to her courage and her deep commitment to the struggle for freedom in South Africa and elsewhere. Close friends told stories of her love for wilderness and the way in which she had made peace with mortality. Colleagues praised her professionalism as an archivist. And the Deputy Ambassador of the Netherlands shared a message of condolence.

Dialogue on 'Archives at Crossroads' which was organised by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and co-convened with the National Archives and the Constitution of Public Intellectual Life Research Project. The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory hosted a Donor Recognition Ceremony.Tokyo Sexwale and Irene Menell gave Legacy Champion certificates to the Government of India & Vodacom (Pty) Ltd. The Government of India was also recognised for its contribution to the Centre’s building with the unveiling of a plaque at the front entrance. At the ceremony, the Centre of Memory also received a mechanical boost by way of a vehicle donated by Volkswagen SA and a commitment from comedian and actor, Eddie Izzard to a future donation. Izzard is in South Africa to run 27 marathons in 27 days in honour of the 27 years Nelson Mandela spent in prison.
