Hands Across South Africa aided the Nelson Mandela Foundation to continue to grow the momentum that legacy advocates like Gareth Cliff have already inspired in order to honour the life and legacy of Madiba, and in so doing make every day a Mandela Day. The event took place at the Phokosho School in Alexandra, Johannesburg.

In celebration of ‘Mandela Day’ the Mission identified the disabled as a sector of the Japanese society that is disadvantaged. It learned about the concept of Swan bakeries and recognised the values as similar to those of the spirit of Nelson Mandela emphasising ‘social cohesion’. In this regard, embassy staff spent the morning of Saturday 18 July at the Swan bakery in Akasaka teaching the staff to cook famous South African dishes such as Bobotie, magwenya and milk tart. At the end of the cooking session, the embassy staff and their family members sat down with the employees of the bakery and had a marvellous lunch that had been jointly prepared.

The Launch of Mandela Day took place at the Tlatlohang Primary School, a disadvantaged school situated in White City, Jabavu As the emphasis for Nelson Mandela Day 2012 is being placed on raising youth through decent education, the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory – in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education – is driving some of South Africa’s most meaningful initiatives, namely the Container Library Project and the 94+ Schools Project, inspired to improve the conditions of our more impoverished schools and encourage literacy to children within our historically disadvantaged communities.

On 6 September 2014, right in the middle of National Literacy Week, students and educators at Skeen Primary School in Alexandra township, Johannesburg, celebrated the opening of the school’s Mandela Day container library. The library is the 49th facility of it kind to open since the launch of the Mandela Day container library project in 2012.
In the heart of the Limpopo farmlands, near the Botswana border, lies the village of Senwabarwana. The impoverished village (also known as Bochum), founded by businessman Stanley Thema, is one of the fastest-growing rural areas in South Africa. 147 learners attending Thabantsho Primary School have little choice but to walk kilometres every day just to get to class. Jade Orgill, Project Manager at Breadline Africa, reported that while she was setting up the school’s container library in preparation for the launch event, some Grade 7 learners explained to her that none of them had never seen a library before – and certainly not so many books in one place.
The 3rd consecutive Nelson Mandela Day Marathon was held on 31 August 2014 under the rules of IAAF, AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races Distance), and the KZN Athletics Club. The event has 3 races categorized. It starts at the Manaye Hall in Imbali and finishes at The Nelson Mandela Capture Site, Howick. The above-mentioned races each meander through the beautiful breathtaking landscape of uMgungundlovu District Municipality passing historic sites along the way and ending at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. The Nelson Mandela Foundation together with its partners the Imbumba Foundation and the Kolisi Foundation launched the #Each1Feed1 Digital Voucher in Potchefstroom, North West Province. The launch was in partnership with Boxer Superstores and Pick ‘n Pay. From Potchefstroom, the partnership team moved to communities in and around Klerksdorp which are suffering from extreme poverty and inequality. A total of 2 000 #Each1Feed1 food packs were delivered, each one designed to support a family for approximately a month.
