The President's Award for Youth Empowerment has strong international links through its affiliation with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award which was started in 1956 by HRH, The Prince Philip. The Award Programme was first introduced in the United Kingdom in 1956 as The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The aim was to motivate young people to become involved in a balanced programme of voluntary self-development activities to take them through the potentially difficult period between adolescence and adulthood. Rolihlahla Primary School unveiled by the first democratic President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and named after him in 1993. The school is situated at Etwatwa, Daveyton.
There are numerous medalliions and coins named after Mandela and coined in his honour. The first coin was minted in Norway 1993 on the occassion of the Nobel Peace Prize. Coins were also minted to honour his inauguration, his presidency, equal education, his 90th birthday, Robben Island. Coins and medallions are in gold and other precious metals and in different weight.
