The Nelson Mandela Foundation and Joburg City Parks & Zoo have collaborated to commemorate the 9th anniversary of the passing of Madiba. Over the years, the Foundation has marked the event through dialogue on critical social issues. This year the celebration was marked by a special Nelson Mandela Day convening, opening a park in the Riverlea community. The park will stand in honour of Madiba's legacy, and the values that he espoused. It will be the tangible site for our One Million Tree Campaign, which aims to promote environmental justice, and food security and mitigate the impact of climate change.

The legacy of Nelson Mandela was given wings with the unveiling of the Mandela Day logo by South African Airways (SAA) on the first aircraft of its entire fleet. The new branded A330-200 Airbus, fourth out of six new aircraft, was revealed to sponsors and the media at the airways’ technical park in Johannesburg. An air-balloon made in honour of Nelson Mandela was released in Brazil. This balloon made of tissue paper and glue was made by 11 people for 8 months on average 4 hours per day, to honour the leader of a nation suffered.

Happy Science, a Tokyo-based international religious organisation, handed over a Mandela Day Container Library to Tshifudi Primary School in Tshifudi Village, Vhembe Municipality, Limpopo, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF). "Bikers for Mandela" involved a group of celebrities and a group of motorcyclists on a five-day ride from Johannesburg to the coastal city of Cape Town with the aim to raise awareness about and support for Nelson Mandela Day. The bikers were stopping at selected villages and cities, where they participated in community projects and other social initiatives.
