The legacy of Nelson Mandela was given wings with the unveiling of the Mandela Day logo by South African Airways (SAA) on the first aircraft of its entire fleet. The new branded A330-200 Airbus, fourth out of six new aircraft, was revealed to sponsors and the media at the airways’ technical park in Johannesburg. Bikers for Mandela Day- NMF staffers, 25 riders and 15 support staff and a group of celebrities on a eight-day ride from Johannesburg to the coastal city of Cape Town with the aim to raise awareness about and support for Nelson Mandela Day.

150 learners, teachers and cycling enthusiasts convened at the Torah Academy campus in Norwood, Johannesburg, for the 14th annual CycAlive challenge, a youth highlight in the Mandela Day activities calendar. The Launch of Mandela Day took place at the Tlatlohang Primary School, a disadvantaged school situated in White City, Jabavu As the emphasis for Nelson Mandela Day 2012 is being placed on raising youth through decent education, the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory – in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education – is driving some of South Africa’s most meaningful initiatives, namely the Container Library Project and the 94+ Schools Project, inspired to improve the conditions of our more impoverished schools and encourage literacy to children within our historically disadvantaged communities.
An air-balloon made in honour of Nelson Mandela was released in Brazil. This balloon made of tissue paper and glue was made by 11 people for 8 months on average 4 hours per day, to honour the leader of a nation suffered.

Hands Across South Africa aided the Nelson Mandela Foundation to continue to grow the momentum that legacy advocates like Gareth Cliff have already inspired in order to honour the life and legacy of Madiba, and in so doing make every day a Mandela Day. The event took place at the Phokosho School in Alexandra, Johannesburg.

The Great Park Synagoge hosted a 67 minutes drive to collect blankets, clothes and non-perishable foods. The Friends of the Inner City spent 67 minutes cleaning Lorna Court in Johannesburg's CBD as part of their ‘ Build your Neighbourhood’ initiative. The Conference Connection donated food and gifts to St Martins’ Children’s home and blankets to Reservoir Hills residents in Durban The DEC planted trees. Scorpion Legal Protection provided lunch to the Durban Children’s Home Free State Treasury planted trees A baby named after Mandela Moyo restaurant took party packs, face painters and drummers to the Umthombo Street Children in Durban and the Charlotte Maxeke hospital in Johannesburg. They also provided entertainment at a care centre for disabled children in Khayelitsha. Roedean School collected blankets and food for organisations which care for orphans and vulnerable children.
In celebration of ‘Mandela Day’ the Mission identified the disabled as a sector of the Japanese society that is disadvantaged. It learned about the concept of Swan bakeries and recognised the values as similar to those of the spirit of Nelson Mandela emphasising ‘social cohesion’. In this regard, embassy staff spent the morning of Saturday 18 July at the Swan bakery in Akasaka teaching the staff to cook famous South African dishes such as Bobotie, magwenya and milk tart. At the end of the cooking session, the embassy staff and their family members sat down with the employees of the bakery and had a marvellous lunch that had been jointly prepared.

In the heart of the Limpopo farmlands, near the Botswana border, lies the village of Senwabarwana. The impoverished village (also known as Bochum), founded by businessman Stanley Thema, is one of the fastest-growing rural areas in South Africa. 147 learners attending Thabantsho Primary School have little choice but to walk kilometres every day just to get to class. Jade Orgill, Project Manager at Breadline Africa, reported that while she was setting up the school’s container library in preparation for the launch event, some Grade 7 learners explained to her that none of them had never seen a library before – and certainly not so many books in one place.

The departure of the 'Trek4Mandela' from the Nelson Mandela Foundation. This expedition was established in 2012 when Richard Mabaso, Chief Executive Officer of the Imbumba Foundation, overheard a fearful conversation between his mom and niece about puberty. Richard invited his friend Sibusiso Vilane, the first black person in the world to conquer the Three Poles Challenge (reaching the South Pole, North Pole and Mount Everest), to lead him on his first expedition to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The objectives of the climb were to: Create awareness about the challenges facing impoverished girls in rural and poor schools during their monthly cycles; Raise funds to purchase sanitary towels so that needy girls can go to school when having their menstrual period and to Educate people about Mandela Day and the need to take action beyond 18 July, thereby helping to make every day a Mandela Day.

The 3rd consecutive Nelson Mandela Day Marathon was held on 31 August 2014 under the rules of IAAF, AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races Distance) and the KZN Athletics Club. The event has 3 raced categorized. It starts at the Manaye Hall in Imbali and finishes at The Nelson Mandela Capture Site, Howick. The above-mentioned races each meander through the beautiful breathtaking landscape of uMgungundlovu District Municipality passing historic sites along the way and ending at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. Runners who complete the race are awarded unique Nelson Mandela Marathon medal which is symbolic of the day South Africa gained its freedom.
On 6 September 2014, right in the middle of National Literacy Week, students and educators at Skeen Primary School in Alexandra township, Johannesburg, celebrated the opening of the school’s Mandela Day container library. Happy Science, a Tokyo-based international religious organisation, handed over a Mandela Day Container Library to Tshifudi Primary School in Tshifudi Village, Vhembe Municipality, Limpopo, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF). Habitat for Humanity South Africa in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Department of Human Settlements is honouring Tata Madiba’s legacy by building homes for low-income families at Palm Ridge, City of Ekurhuleni. The Nelson Mandela Legacy RIDE4HOPE aims to create a platform to carry Mandela’s message of hope as it cuts across two provinces; from Vilakazi Street in Soweto (Gauteng) to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site in Howick (KwaZulu-Natal). The ride was 554km, which was split into 4 days, and the photographs show cyclists at Mandela House and on the road and the arrival to Howick.

Professor Ariel Dorfman reads to the students at Bertrams primary school as part of his Mandela Day commitments. After the reading the children had the opportunity to ask Professor Dorfman questions. Professor Dorfman used the reading as an opportunity to encourage the Grade 1, 2, 3 and 4 learners to read and to start writing, especially if they have the need to express themselves.
