Thembekile Mandela Memorial Stone Unveiling Ceremony

The Touwsrivier Heritage and Conservation Society hosted a Memorial Stone Unveiling Ceremony at the Gideon Joubert Memorial Park, Jane Street, Touwsrivier, in the honour of the personal sacrifices of the Mandela Family and to commemorate 50th anniversary since the passing away of Thembekile Mandela and others who died in a car accident just outside Touwsrivier on 13 July 1969.

Ndileka and Nandi Mandela, daughters of the late Madiba Thembekile Mandela unveiled the Memorial Stone, planted two trees near the entrance of Touwsrivier and also planted an Aloe at the accident site along the N1, while Mayor Alderman Antoinette Steyn and Deputy Mayor unveiled an information sign detailing the story surrounding the accident.

In celebrating the memory and legacy of Nelson Mandela, the Gauteng City Region, City of Tshwane in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation hosted Mandela Remembrance walk and run event in the Union Buildings. The event was held virtually on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December, with just a small number of people observing all COVID protocols and gathering at the Union Buildings to do a symbolic 6.7 kilometre walk through the streets of Tshwane in his memory and also to remember all the lives lost globally to the Coronavirus in 2020.

The score music tribute to Nelson Mandela 100 concert commemorated Nelson Mandela’s Life and Legacy, calling for people in the world over to rise up and “Take Action, Insipre Change, Make Every Day a Mandela Day”. To commemorate this historic occasion, the Nelson Mandela Music Tribute (NMMT) on 18, 19 & 20 July at Praia do Aterro, Matosinhos, Porto, Portugal benefited the Nelson Mandela Foundation and local Portuguese charities including Apela.

The event was presented by the Municipality of Matosinhos / Porto and the Embassy of South Africa together with Score Music in association with Thirty-Three Productions, Inc., which joined together to organise a fitting musical tribute to Mandela and his legacy of achieving social change through peaceful means and dialogue.

The Nelson Mandela Music Tribute, staged on the shores of Matosinhos, Porto, was a three-day benefit event celebrating the indomitable spirit of Nelson Mandela, also known as Madiba. NMMT featured a star-studded lineup of world-class musical artists, award-winning actors, and celebrated dignitaries, with 100% of the net proceeds donated to charity.
