Biographical history
Lawyer and anti-apartheid activist who came to South Africa in 1893. He developed a strategy of non-violence resistance. In 1914 he left South Africa for India. Led India to independence in 1947 and inspired civil rights movements around the world. He was given the name Mahatma which means "great soul" in sanskrit by the people of India.
