To mark International Literacy Week, Macmillan in association with the READ Trust and the Nelson Mandela Foundation have launched a children’s version of Mr Mandela’s autobiography Long Walk to Freedom.
South African author Chris van Wyk was at the launch, held at the READ Educational Trust in Johannesburg. “I’ve been looking forward to this day – I was very honoured when asked to write this book,” said Van Wyk.

"Bikers for Mandela" involved a group of celebrities and a group of motorcyclists on a five-day ride from Johannesburg to the coastal city of Cape Town with the aim to raise awareness about and support for Nelson Mandela Day. The bikers were stopping at selected villages and cities, where they participated in community projects and other social initiatives.

South Africa Airways launches branding for International Mandela Day, 2011.07.05, Johannesburg: [Set of Seven Still Images]

The legacy of Nelson Mandela was given wings with the unveiling of the Mandela Day logo by South African Airways (SAA) on the first aircraft of its entire fleet. The new branded A330-200 Airbus, fourth out of six new aircraft, was revealed to sponsors and the media at the airways’ technical park in Johannesburg. Siza Mzimela, CEO of SAA in her opening address said, “As an African carrier with global reach, it is only natural for SAA to strengthen its relationship with the Nelson Mandela Foundation by sharing our icon’s message with the world.”

Launch of the ''Mandalas for Mandela'' exhibition. A collaboration between the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Arts Alive and Imbali Visual Arts and the Constitution Hill. In the heart of the Limpopo farmlands, near the Botswana border, lies the village of Senwabarwana. The impoverished village (also known as Bochum), founded by businessman Stanley Thema, is one of the fastest-growing rural areas in South Africa. 147 learners attending Thabantsho Primary School have little choice but to walk kilometres every day just to get to class. Jade Orgill, Project Manager at Breadline Africa, reported that while she was setting up the school’s container library in preparation for the launch event, some Grade 7 learners explained to her that none of them had never seen a library before – and certainly not so many books in one place.

President Michelle Bachelet of Chile, presenting the 12th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture on 9 August 2014. This event marks the 52nd anniversary of Mr Mandela’s capture on 5 August 1962.
The lecture was held at the historic City Hall in the City of Cape Town, a significant and poignant venue, as it is from this location that Mr Mandela gave his inaugural address to the people of South Africa after being released from prison in 1990. The theme of the 2014 lecture is "Building social cohesion through active citizenship".
The reception was held immediately after the lecture.
