This statement, issued after the positive response to a three day strike, announces a second phase in the fight against Verwoerd, a country-wide campaign of non-cooperation, and announces a National Convention. It also explains his decision, in accordance with the advice of the National Action Council, to carry on his political work underground rather than leaving the country or giving himself up for arrest to a government he did not recognise.

The archives of the Robben Island Museum are housed at and managed by the UWC/RIM Mayibuye Archives. Some are located on the island, but the bulk is at the UWC Campus in Belville, Cape Town. The archives hold a large collection of artifacts, documents, photographs, artworks, personal papers and audio-visual materials. Although the emphasis is on South African organisations and people, many AAMs (national and international) and other international anti-apartheid organisations are represented in the collection. The IDAF, for example, deposited its entire archive at UWC/RIM Mayibuye.

The Road to Democracy in South Africa

'The Road to Democracy in South Africa' is a series of books published by the South African Democratic Education Trust (SADET). Volume 3 is dedicated to the International Solidarity movement and organisations. Volume 5 deals with the African Solidarity movement.

South African History Archive

SAHA is a human rights archive located at Constitution Hill, Johannesburg. The Struggles for Justice Programme, though mainly concentrating on South African organisations and people, also contains materials of international AAMs.

South African Non-Racial Olympic Committee

The South African Non-Racial Olympic Committee (SAN-ROC) was formed in South Africa in 1962. SAN-ROC began operating from London when one of its founders, Dennis Brutus, went into exile in 1966. In 1970 Brutus moved to the United States, and SAN-ROC was then based in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Forerunners were the Committee for International Recognition, formed by non-racial sportsmen in 1955, and succeeded by the South African Sports Association (SASA) in 1958. SAN-ROC played a major role in South Africa being excluded from the Olympic Games in 1966, and from the entire Olympic movement in 1970.

Institute for Security Studies

The ISS has worked with the OAU and has, amongst others, released a CD-ROM containing all OAU Council of Ministers and Summit decisions, declarations and commitments from 1963 to 2001. The CD also contains the key documents for the following regional organisations: SADC, ECOWAS, IGAD and COMESA. It is a work in progress, and will be updated with documents from other sub-regional organisations and more recent documentation, as it becomes available.

Visit by the Archives team to Mrs Angelinah Hlope, one of the women who participated in the Women’s march to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956. Mrs Angelina Hlope is also a member of the ‘Gogos for Mandela’ soccer team. The official name of the soccer team is Vakhegula Vakhegula Football Club.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Exhibition: South Africa

“Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” is the title of the virtual exhibition which was made for Mandela Day events in 2011. The title was taken from the children’s song which Nelson Mandela, in the early years after his release, would sing to and with groups of small children. This exhibition not only highlighted Nelson Mandela’s love of children; his own and the children all over the world but also their attraction to him.

Nelson Mandela interviewed on the South African traditional leaders from the frontier wars that took place in South Africa. Nelson Mandela hails one of the wisdom and bravery fighters such as Siqungathi , Makhado and Mampuru being the good at warfare as well as guerrilla tactics. In the interview Nelson Mandela mentions how the missionaries helped in the educating the new generation of leaders like Seme, Xuma himself and Oliver R. Tambo and all his other comrades were products of missionary education but not of the government of South Africa at the time. Talks about strategies with that they engaged in the struggle against Apartheid.

Nelson Mandela cautions that people should not discriminate or stigmatise people that are living with the disease and people must talk about sex with the children to make them aware of the dangers of HIV/AIDS in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
