Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Exhibition: South Africa

“Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” is the title of the virtual exhibition which was made for Mandela Day events in 2011. The title was taken from the children’s song which Nelson Mandela, in the early years after his release, would sing to and with groups of small children. This exhibition not only highlighted Nelson Mandela’s love of children; his own and the children all over the world but also their attraction to him.

Third Juliet Hollister Award was presented to Nelson Mandela during a plenary gathering in the Parliament of the World religions in Cape Town

This award is given annually to religious and secular leaders who actively promote interfaith values. The presentation of the award to Mr Mandela recognizes his struggle for freedom and tolerance in South Africa and lifts up his model of reconciliation with non-violence.

This statement, issued after the positive response to a three day strike, announces a second phase in the fight against Verwoerd, a country-wide campaign of non-cooperation, and announces a National Convention. It also explains his decision, in accordance with the advice of the National Action Council, to carry on his political work underground rather than leaving the country or giving himself up for arrest to a government he did not recognise.

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) launch its first commemorative banknote series, in celebration of the first democratically elected president Nelson Mandela’s birth centenary. These notes cover all denominations – R10, R20, R50, R100 and R200. As part of the celebrations, the South African Mint, a subsidiary of the SARB, also issues a new commemorative circulation R5 coin. ​
