Archival history

This is an artificial record group created by the Jakes Gerwel Foundation (JGF) to honour the legacy of Prof. Jakes Gerwel. In late 2019, the JGF approached archivist Andre Landman and mandated him to establish an archive. A collection of papers at the Gerwel family home (roughly arranged previously by Prof. Andre Odendaal) formed the initial tranche of materials available (subfonds JGA1). Other donations have been solicited and the process of collecting materials to augment the family donation is ongoing.

Content and structure area

Scope and content

This collection of materials was undertaken by the Jakes Gerwel Foundation as part of its mandate to preserve the memory and legacy of Prof. Gert (Jakes) Gerwel. The material thus incorporates materials created and collected by Prof. Gerwel himself as well as donations by others (each donation described in a separate subfonds). The material ranges from Gerwel's student days in the 1960s to shortly before his death in 2012 (and in some donations beyond that date).
