TRANSCRIPT

The President has today announced the names of the members of the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers established in terms of the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers Act, 1997.

The chairperson of the Commission is Mr Justice Jan Steyn who also chaired the previous Commission appointed in terms of Section 3 of the Commission on the Remuneration of Representatives Act, 1994.

The other members appointed are: Mr. D C Brink; Mr. T N Chapman; Mr C V Jones; Mr. A S Nkonyeni; Ms. C September (all of whom served on the previous Commission); and Ms. D Mokhobo (who replaces Dr. Mamphela Ramphele who resigned on 17 December 1997 due to her extensive commitments as Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town).

The President is particularly pleased that the serving members of the Commission were willing once again to undertake the task entrusted to them by the Constitution. The Commission has earned great credibility, not only because of its representatives and expertise, but also because of the objectivity and independence with which it has discharged its duties as well as its open approach towards the execution of its functions. It had laid a new foundation for remuneration, moving away from awarding hidden benefits towards a transparent remuneration package, and made a very real contribution to good governance in the areas for which public office bearers are accountable.
