White certificate in large black folder with white fabric interor.Taken out of folder for preservation. Folder cover has a thick dark green stripe running vertically on the left side. It is engraved in gold with the seal of the City of Glasgow. The black section of the folder is engraved in gold as follows: Freedom of the City of Glasgow.
Certificate has hand painted, multi-coloured seal of the City of Glasgow on the left side. The seal is also stamped, and weaved with paper ribbon, at right side of certificate. Certificate text, in black, gold, and red, reads:
The City of Glasgow
At Glasgow and within the city chambers there on this ninth day of October One thousand nine hundred and ninety-three years
Which day the Lord Proviost, Bailes and Council of the City of Glasgow
being assembled, did, inpursuance of a Resolution made at a meeting of the Council held on the eighteenth day of December One Thousand nine Hundred and eighty years
Admit and receive and do hereby admit and receive
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela
To be a Burgess and Guild Brother of the City
In recognition of the struggle of the African people of his struggle against white domination, of his struggle against black domination, a struggle which is his life.

Scroll: contour of Africa with Mandela's portrait on to. Round chain. Nelson Mandela. The People Shall govern. This scroll commemorates the awards of the freedoms of the cities and boroughs listed here to Nelson Mandela, at a joint ceremony and celebration in the City Chambers, Glasgow on this day 9th. October 1993. The freedoms of these cities and boroughs are awarded to Nelson Mandela in support of his resistance to the evil of apartheid, and in tribute to the courage and fortitute of the African National Congress and the people of South Africa in their struggles for universal human and civil rights in that country.
