Proclamation
A Proclamation declaring December 6 through December 12 , 1999, "Nelson Mandela and Gracia Machel Week" in the City of Seattle.
Whereas, despite his imprisonment for decades because of his work on behalf of democratic ideals for his country, Nelson Mandela never wavered in his devotion to freedom, democracy, and equality for South africans; and
Whereas, upon his release from prison and subsequent election to the Presidency of South Africa, Nelson Mandela refused to answer racism, oppression, violence, with more of the same, but with democracy for all; and
Whereas the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Nelson Mandela in recognition of his work to bring peace and democracy to South Africa; and
Whereas, whereas Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel continue to inspire the entire world;
Now, therefore, be it proclaimed by the City Council of the City of Seattle that: Sunday, December 6, 1999 through Saturday, December 12, 1999, is "Nelson Mandela and Gracia Machel Week" in the City of Seattle.
Adopted by the city council and signed by us in open session in authentication of its adoption this 6th day of December, 1999.
