The 2018 Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture, in partnership with the Motsepe Foundation, was delivered by former US President Barack Obama in Johannesburg on 17 July. To honour the centennial of Madiba’s birth, the 2018 lecture’s theme was “Renewing the Mandela Legacy and Promoting Active Citizenship in a Changing World”. The lecture focused on creating conditions for bridging divides, working across ideological lines, and resisting oppression and inequality.
In celebrating the memory and legacy of Nelson Mandela, the Gauteng City Region, City of Tshwane in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation hosted Mandela Remembrance walk and run event in the Union Buildings. The event was held virtually on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December, with just a small number of people observing all COVID protocols and gathering at the Union Buildings to do a symbolic 6.7 kilometre walk through the streets of Tshwane in his memory and also to remember all the lives lost globally to the Coronavirus in 2020.

Distribution was done in Mamelodi for two beneficiaries.
Nelson Mandela Foundation in partnership with Habitat for Humanity and the Department of Human Settlements honouring Nelson Mandela legacy by building 100 homes for 100 families across three regions; Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal. The Nelson Mandela Foundation invited Chief Khosi Vho Ravele R.R., five learners and five coordinators from Maulume Village to visit the Nelson Mandela Foundation and other legacy sites within Johannesburg. The trip was to give the learners an opportunity to learn about the history of their country as future leaders.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation launched a new strategy for International Nelson Mandela Day, titled Mandela Day: The Next Chapter, at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in May 2019. The new strategy charts a new path for the ten-year-old initiative significantly changing the manner in which it will impact on people’s lives. The launch was attended by stakeholders from global organisations, corporate South Africa and civil society organisations - among them, the United Nations, Habitat for Humanity, Vodacom, early childhood development practitioners and national celebrities.
