The departure of the 'Trek4Mandela' from the Nelson Mandela Foundation. This expedition was established in 2012 when Richard Mabaso, Chief Executive Officer of the Imbumba Foundation, overheard a fearful conversation between his mom and niece about puberty. Richard invited his friend Sibusiso Vilane, the first black person in the world to conquer the Three Poles Challenge (reaching the South Pole, North Pole and Mount Everest), to lead him on his first expedition to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The objectives of the climb were to: Create awareness about the challenges facing impoverished girls in rural and poor schools during their monthly cycles; Raise funds to purchase sanitary towels so that needy girls can go to school when having their menstrual period and to Educate people about Mandela Day and the need to take action beyond 18 July, thereby helping to make every day a Mandela Day.
An air-balloon made in honour of Nelson Mandela was released in Brazil. This balloon made of tissue paper and glue was made by 11 people for 8 months on average 4 hours per day, to honour the leader of a nation suffered.

Making Reading Fun is an initiative of the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Archive and Research department, which aims to make reading a much more fun activity for the future leaders of our country. The initiative targets different age groups each time, with this month’s reading aimed at our youth between 6 and 12 years of age.

Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity (AFRE) - one of an interconnected set of fellowship programs launched by The Atlantic Philanthropies as part of the foundation's final grants to empower new generations of leaders to work together around the globe to advance fairer, healthier and more inclusive societies. It is a program to support courageous and creative leaders dedicated to dismantling anti-black racism in the United States and South Africa, two nations with deep and enduring legacies of racial exclusion and discrimination.
The 2018 Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture, in partnership with the Motsepe Foundation, was delivered by former US President Barack Obama in Johannesburg on 17 July. To honour the centennial of Madiba’s birth, the 2018 lecture’s theme was “Renewing the Mandela Legacy and Promoting Active Citizenship in a Changing World”. The lecture focused on creating conditions for bridging divides, working across ideological lines, and resisting oppression and inequality.
