On 6 September 2014, right in the middle of National Literacy Week, students and educators at Skeen Primary School in Alexandra township, Johannesburg, celebrated the opening of the school’s Mandela Day container library. The library is the 49th facility of it kind to open since the launch of the Mandela Day container library project in 2012.

The Mandela Materials Database is a guide to the Mandela archive located with the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory and Dialogue and elsewhere. Both local and international repositories have been surveyed for any material on Mr Mandela to include in the database. The purpose of this database is to point researchers to the relevant repositories holding the actual archival material. Although much of the material identified in the database does not relate directly to the Rivonia Trial, it has been referenced here as Mandela was one of the main protagonists in the Rivonia Trial. Any material directly related to the Rivonia Trial as been cross-referenced in this database.
5 folders, several with sub-folders with digital photos of (International) Mandela Day activities and events; also covering the Mandela Day social dialogue on mental health stigma. One folder contains 24 sub-folders (mainly low resolution files) and the other 4 folders together have 556 photos.

The Launch of Mandela Day took place at the Tlatlohang Primary School, a disadvantaged school situated in White City, Jabavu As the emphasis for Nelson Mandela Day 2012 is being placed on raising youth through decent education, the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory – in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education – is driving some of South Africa’s most meaningful initiatives, namely the Container Library Project and the 94+ Schools Project, inspired to improve the conditions of our more impoverished schools and encourage literacy to children within our historically disadvantaged communities.

The legacy of Nelson Mandela was given wings with the unveiling of the Mandela Day logo by South African Airways (SAA) on the first aircraft of its entire fleet. The new branded A330-200 Airbus, fourth out of six new aircraft, was revealed to sponsors and the media at the airways’ technical park in Johannesburg. To mark International Literacy Week, Macmillan in association with the READ Trust and the Nelson Mandela Foundation have launched a children’s version of Mr Mandela’s autobiography Long Walk to Freedom. South African author Chris van Wyk was at the launch, held at the READ Educational Trust in Johannesburg. “I’ve been looking forward to this day – I was very honoured when asked to write this book,” said Van Wyk.
