150 learners, teachers and cycling enthusiasts convened at the Torah Academy campus in Norwood, Johannesburg, for the 14th annual CycAlive challenge, a youth highlight in the Mandela Day activities calendar. The Launch of Mandela Day took place at the Tlatlohang Primary School, a disadvantaged school situated in White City, Jabavu As the emphasis for Nelson Mandela Day 2012 is being placed on raising youth through decent education, the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory – in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education – is driving some of South Africa’s most meaningful initiatives, namely the Container Library Project and the 94+ Schools Project, inspired to improve the conditions of our more impoverished schools and encourage literacy to children within our historically disadvantaged communities.

The legacy of Nelson Mandela was given wings with the unveiling of the Mandela Day logo by South African Airways (SAA) on the first aircraft of its entire fleet. The new branded A330-200 Airbus, fourth out of six new aircraft, was revealed to sponsors and the media at the airways’ technical park in Johannesburg. Members of the "Bikers for International Mandela Day" contingent met at the Nelson Mandela Foundation to discuss the rally route, the ethos of Mandela Day and safety precautions involved in 2011 Bikers for Mandela Day event, The Bikers for Mandela Day will depart from Montecasino, Johannesburg, on July 11. Their eight-day ride will end in Tshwane on July 18– Mandela Day.

To mark International Literacy Week, Macmillan in association with the READ Trust and the Nelson Mandela Foundation have launched a children’s version of Mr Mandela’s autobiography Long Walk to Freedom. South African author Chris van Wyk was at the launch, held at the READ Educational Trust in Johannesburg. “I’ve been looking forward to this day – I was very honoured when asked to write this book,” said Van Wyk.

An opening of the exhibition 'Mandela- Gandhi Wall' with Ela Gandhi, Birad Rajaran, Maniben Sita, Virendra Gupta as well as Sello Hatang. The interactive, multimedia display features photographs, QR(quick recognition) codes that can be read by cell phones which then play videos that Birad Rajaran has loaded on to the internet, and a game that visitors can play by answering questions on the back of cards (similar to postcards) and then matching the photo on the card with the one on the wall.
