Transnet Port Terminals, in partnership with Mandela Day, have created an initiative called “Shoes on Feet”, which aims to collect school shoes for disadvantaged children in key communities. "Shoes on Feet" volunteers distributed the first donations to learners at Isidingo Primary School in Umlazi Township, Durban, before moving to schools in Port Elizabeth and the Western Cape during March.

Lucia Raadschelders Memorial Service

The Nelson Mandela Foundation pays tributes to Lucia Raadschelders, with family, friends, and colleagues. Following Lucia’s wishes, it was a modest occasion, with the emphasis on storytelling. Three of her nine siblings travelled from the Netherlands to attend. Her brother Jan Raadschelders shared reminiscences from her childhood. A number of her former Operation Vula comrades attested to her courage and her deep commitment to the struggle for freedom in South Africa and elsewhere. Close friends told stories of her love for wilderness and the way in which she had made peace with mortality. Colleagues praised her professionalism as an archivist. And the Deputy Ambassador of the Netherlands shared a message of condolence.

The project helps to preserve thousands of documents, photographs, and audio-visual materials chronicling the life and times of Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Recommended by Google, the two institutions commissioned Ardon Bar-Hama to undertake the digitisation.

The launch was attended by stakeholders from global organisations, corporate South Africa and civil society organisations - among them, the United Nations, Habitat for Humanity, Vodacom, early childhood development practitioners and national celebrities.

The ride was 554km, which was split into 4 days, and the photographs show cyclists at Mandela House and on the road and the arrival to Howick.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation provided library books for Bushbuckridge’s Mapaleni Primary School’s new library as part of the Mandela Day Library Initiative. Mapaleni is the feeder school to Makhosana Manzini High School in the rural village of Calcutta C in Mpumalanga on the edge of the Kruger National Park, and a beneficiary of a partnership between the Adopt-a-School Foundation, in collaboration with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), and the Department of Basic Education to improve schooling in the poverty-stricken area.

The city of Cape Town Nelson Mandela centenary celebrations. Nelson Mandela Statue unveiled on the Cape Town City Hall Balcony. The Switch-on of the Festive Lights, Adderley Street annually marks the start of the festive season in Cape Town. On 2 Dec 2018 the Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Ald Dan Plato switched on the festive lights at 20:30 where 80 000+ residents and tourists enjoyed the concert, festive lights and video mapping display on the City Hall wall of the theme. On 2 Dec 2018 the theme was: Cape Town, City of Inspiration. Madiba’s life of hope was displayed with the centenary message: Be the Legacy.
