Records of the Rivonia trial, State versus Nelson Mandela and nine others. The accused are Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Dennis Goldberg, Govan Mbeki, Ahmed Kathrada, Lionel Bernstein, Raymond Mhlaba, James Kantor, Elias Motsoaledi and Andrew Mlangeni. The collection includes the indictment, opening address, statements and evidence by witnesses for the State and for the accused. Evaluation of evidence, exhibits including photographs. An important component of the collection includes material confiscated at Lilliesleaf farm in Rivonia, such as Mandela's 1962 diary and other documents in his handwriting, most of them relating to armed struggle. It also includes Mandela's statement from the dock, and the State's concluding address. A significant part of the collection includes materials used to build up the State's case against the Rivonia Trialists.

In his annual presidential address on 8 January 1986, ANC president Oliver Tambo called on South Africans to make apartheid ungovernable through armed action and militant struggle. But unknown to the world, on that very day, the quiet-spoken mathematics teacher and aspirant priest turned reluctant revolutionary had also set up a secret think tank in Lusaka, which he named the Constitution Committee, giving it an ‘ad hoc unique exercise’ that had ‘no precedent in the history of the movement’.
Knowing that all wars end at a negotiating table, and judging the balance of forces to be moving in favour of the liberation movement, Tambo wanted the
ANC to hold the initiative after the fall of apartheid. Assisted by Pallo Jordan, he instructed his new think tank to formulate the principles and draft the outlines of a constitution that could unite South Africa when the time came to talk in the fledgling days of freedom and democracy. The seven-member team, including Albie Sachs, Kader Asmal and Zola Skweyiya, started deliberating and reporting to Tambo. In correspondence, they typically addressed him as ‘Dear Comrade President’.

Occasion - Drum asked several non-European leaders for answers to three questions concerning the planned deomstrations. These were Mr. Mandela's answers. Summary - The demonstrations will be peaceful and will include work stoppages, meetings and processions. The aim of the protest is to have grievances heard and, ideally, have a national convention to discuss a new constitution.
This collection does not have material directly related to the Rivonia Trial. It contains material from after Goldberg was released (IDAF correspondence, ANC documents, press clippings, publications etc.). It has been included as it speaks to the post-prison involvement of one of the Trial's main accused.

This collection consists of files, kept by prison authorities, on all political prisoners held in prisons in South Africa. The list for these files is in three parts but only the first two relate to Rivonia Trialists. List A reflects files of nine people, including Kathrada, Mandela, Mbeki, Mhlaba, Mlangeni of the Rivonia Trialists. These files contain correspondence.
List B has many more political prisoners' files. These files contain general correspondence re prisoners, transfers etc. The only Rivonia Trialist in List B is Denis Goldberg.
List C deals with specific issues such as medical attention and education of prisoners but does not include any of the Rivonia Trialists.

Photos of a dialogue held at Glenhove Conference Centre, Johannesburg, facilitated by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in partnership with Brand South Africa. Africa-European economic relations and the challenge of overcoming financial and political alienation was the focus of the dialogue. Ariel Dorfman in a social cohesion sharing session around the issue of xenophobia held at the Gugulethu Community Centre in Cape Town and served as an opportunity to listen to the recurring problems regarding xenophobia.

The event was held in Freedom Park and gathered together authors, writers, journalists, students, scholars and academics to interrogate how art can help build strong and robust democracies.
Dialogue with young people and university students about the Grameen Bank model. Students shared with Prof Yunus their own initiatives in working towards alleviating poverty in their communities. This inter-generational gathering consisted of South Africa’s leading young minds and social entrepreneurs at all levels.
The Dialogue "In Conversations with Ariel Dorfman" was hosted in partnership with the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) School of Drama and the Market Theatre. John Kani read from "Nothing but the Truth" and Wits Drama students performed Dorman’s play "Delirium". This was followed by a facilitated discussion between Dorfman, Kani and Nadine Gordimer.
Proceedings of the HIV/AIDS dialogue held at the Nelson Mandela Foundation attended by deputy minister Noziwe Madlala- Routledge. The dialogue was part of the process of reviewing the Nation Strategic plan on HIV/AIDS. Input from the participants was submitted to the National Department of Health to influence policymaking.
