The Launch of Mandela Day took place at the Tlatlohang Primary School, a disadvantaged school situated in White City, Jabavu As the emphasis for Nelson Mandela Day 2012 is being placed on raising youth through decent education, the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory – in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education – is driving some of South Africa’s most meaningful initiatives, namely the Container Library Project and the 94+ Schools Project, inspired to improve the conditions of our more impoverished schools and encourage literacy to children within our historically disadvantaged communities.
The series begins with the visit of Auma Obama (half-sister of US President Barack Obama), US Ambassador Donald Gips, his wife and sons to the gifts room and the archives.

The opening of a new exhibition to mark 50 years since the formation of the Umkhonto weSizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress. In Pursuit of Liberty: Legality vs. Justice exhibition was launched at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in association with Pambili Productions and South African History Online (SAHO).
The legacy of Nelson Mandela was given wings with the unveiling of the Mandela Day logo by South African Airways (SAA) on the first aircraft of its entire fleet. The new branded A330-200 Airbus, fourth out of six new aircraft, was revealed to sponsors and the media at the airways’ technical park in Johannesburg. Nelson Mandela received an early birthday present: a cheque for R3-million from the Sanlam Ubuntu-Botho empowerment partnership. The donation was made to the Nelson Mandela Endowment Fund to help ensure that the work of the Nelson Mandela Foundation continues.
